Upgrade Considerations

Rapid Evolution

We want to be there with you in the process of upgrading your equipment. We want to be your first stop for cost-effective ITAD solutions.

So, how many servers are there anyway?

As of 2020 there were over 100 million servers in use globally. Any formidable organization uses servers for website hosting, to backup work, and run shared
applications. These servers are located in data centers, server farms, server rooms, and office spaces. In almost all cases they are operational 24/7.

Do servers crash a lot?

We wouldn’t say a lot, but enough issues arise where a well-trained IT department is necessary. Servers have an average failure rate of 5% the first year of operation, increasing to 18% by the seventh year. An IT department will diagnose break/fix requests, and communicate eventualities that could lead to a potential server crash.

How often should an organization replace its servers?

Server crashes can have serious consequences, such as loss of data, business, and even customers. For these reasons your company’s IT department will want to routinely replace servers to avoid operational
catastrophes. Typically, this means between 2-5 years of use, as users increase and more advanced applications are served.

Should companies handle the decommission themselves?

With servers being such an indispensable operational tool,
and now, needing to be replaced more frequently, companies have to replace millions of servers every year. There is collecting, testing, sorting, refurbishing, remarketing, reselling, and recycling. This is a huge concerted effort for each organization. More often than not an outside vendor will be needed to handle some aspects of the decommission.

Decommission is complete: now we can just recycle everything, right?

Not necessarily. There are guidelines set forth to make sure this type of hardware is sent to the right place. The company must choose between selling its old equipment or recycling it. Finding a trusted buyer can be daunting. Recycling can prove to be a challenge due to digital data protection laws and distances between certified recycling facilities. For these reasons, many organizations will employ services like ours. We will schedule a pickup for your decommissioned hardware and take care of everything for you. When you choose Open Circuit Solutions you are choosing our dedication to sustainability, as the vast majority of old hardware will be reclaimed for future use. Whatever is deemed not worthy of reclamation will be recycled under R2 certified guidelines.
